Vacation on a bike? Lower Saxony offers the right terrain in charming landscapes with diverse cycle paths for every target group. 40 long-distance cycle paths extend over a total of 11.000 km, from the flat coastal region, the heath landscape to the Harz Mountains.

An especially well developed and diverse cycle path network is the one comprising the ADFC-certified Elbe, Weser and Ems routes, which are some of the most attractive and scenic in Germany and are popular destinations for racing and touring cyclists. Short day trips are possible on small circular routes in Lower Saxony, for example the themed Lower Saxon Milky Way route. As well as getting a healthy dose of exercise and fresh air, visitors here can learn lots about milk production. Lower Saxony is also home to grand avenues, historical sluices and impressive mills, for example on the 250 km Mühlenroute (Mill route).

Mountain bikers will find what they’re looking for on the sharp inclines and rugged ground in the Harz Mountains and the Solling-Vogler Natural Park. This isn’t just a place of normal mountain bike routes through extensive forests, meadow valleys and clear streams, it’s also an ideal place for adrenaline junkies with its special parkour courses. The fast-paced runs over planks of wood at Solling Funpark and the Hahnenklee Bikepark in the Harz are attractive for downhill riders, with small jumps and steep, muddy turns getting the heart beating faster. But no matter whether you’re looking for sport or relaxation, Lower Saxony has the perfect cycle route for all kinds of bike and cyclist.

Through Lower Saxony in 15 stages - the Weser cycle path 

The varied cycle route spans around 500 km along the Weser river, from Weserbergland up to the North Sea. Beginning at Weserstein, the starting point and confluence of the Werra and Fulda rivers in Hann. Münden, the route runs through the Middle Weser and Wesermarsch regions up towards Cuxland. As well as its fascinating landscape, visitors to Weserbergland are impressed by prestigious buildings such as Polle Castle, Fürstenberg Castle, the UNESCO World Heritage site Corley and historical half-timbered houses such as those in the towns of Höxter, Holzminden and Rinteln.

Magic can be experienced from the saddle on a journey through Hamelin and Bodenwerder - in memory of the Pied Piper and Lying Baron of Münchhausen. The route meanders further northwards by the Weser river, running through Nienburg, past the moor landscapes, Bremen and Bremerhaven and towards Cuxhaven. Anyone looking to experience the northern flair of Lower Saxony will strike gold on this route.
