Otter Center Hankensbüttel

There is something for everyone to discover here: The entrance area is for the fish lovers. A 5-metre-long freshwater aquarium in the entrance hall of the Otter Centre, which is stocked with native fish typical of the region, will delight young and old fans of the underwater world. But of course, the main focus of the nature experience centre is on the family of martens. Badgers, polecats, minks, stone and pine martens, ermines and of course the rare European otters can be observed in enclosures and habitats designed close to nature. Unusual insights are offered at the underwater windows at the otter waterfall or with a view from above into the tops of the pine marten enclosure, the master jumper among the martens.  And when will you have the opportunity to observe the snoring badger in its den?

There is greenery and flowers in the extensive open-air area, birdsong can be heard in every corner and the centre's own bees, which provide the honey in the souvenir shop, have moved back to the orchard meadow together with their hives. Especially now, in these challenging times, a visit to the Otter Centre therefore offers a day in and with nature.

If otters & co. are not seen because they prefer to stay in the cosy building, there is still a lot to explore. In addition to several varied playgrounds with climbing and balancing facilities, there are many information and play units for young and old explorers alike.

The Otter Centre is well provided for the small and the big appetite. In the restaurant with its lakeside terrace and large winter garden you can enjoy delicious home-made food and homemade cakes. When the weather is fine, the "Marder-Klause" on the open-air grounds also invites you to enjoy small refreshments or a snack in between.

The nature experience center in the Südheide Gifhorn is open daily in the summer months, including Sundays and public holidays, from 9:30 am to 6:00 pm. On the extensive open-air grounds, distance rules concerning COVID-19 can easily be observed.  The commented show feeding at Otter & Co. will be carried out flexibly until further notice to avoid crowds of people at the enclosures. Please inform yourself in advance about the current conditions!
